Fasteners And Fixings >> Drill BitsDrill bits tend to wear out with use and consequently you can never have too many drill bits. Fortunately the same drill bit can be used in a drill press, a power drill and a hand drill. Variations, other than in size are mainly in the composition and in the material to be drilled. An other difference is in style, a twist drill bit or a spade drill bit. Twist Drill Bits - can be used on wood, metal, plastics and other soft materials. Care should be taken with the smaller diameter bits as they break easily. High speed steel drill bits are good for drilling most types of material. Carbon steel drill bits are designed for drilling wood and are not to be used on metal. Titanium coated drill bits are designed for drilling metal because the coating hardens the bit and provides some measure of self lubrication. Masonry Drill Bits - are used for drilling stone, brick, block, concrete and quarry tiles. The cutting tip is made from tungsten carbide bonded onto a spiralled steel shaft. A slow speed setting should be used to avoid overheating. SDS Hammer Drill Bits - is a drill with an enhanced hammer action that when compared to a conventional hammer drill is able to deliver hundreds of times the energy per hammer blow. Also it has a different chuck design and special SDS drill bits to eliminate the possibility of bit slip, and also to withstand the force of its hammer action. Speciality Drill Bits - are available for drilling tile and glass, dowels, large holes, holes with flat bottoms, and for countersinking screws.
