Masking Tape is a type of adhesive tape made of easy to tear paper backed with a weak adhesive. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted.
The adhesive is the key element to its usefulness, as it allows the tape to be easily removed. The tape is available in several strengths.

Masking Tape was invented by Dick Drew in 1925. Drew an employee of 3M was visiting a car body shop in St. Paul in the United States of America. He observed workers trying to mask certain parts of the car body using paper and adhesive tape, when they were painting two tone cars. Upon removing the tape
after the paint had dried, part of the paint peeled away,
the workers then having to touch up the paint - a very lengthy and costly process.
Drew realised that the customer needed a tape with a less aggresive adhesive, 3m already had the necessary raw materials available in order to solve the problem. Drew went back to the laboratory and after many attempts hit on the right combination of materials. After obtaining 3M's approval he then manufactured a paper making machine and produced Masking Tape.

Not all Masking Tapes are the same, for protecting glass windows, carpets etc. use a regular masking tape. There are a range of qualities available. The main point of difference is how long you can leave the masking tape stuck on before removing it. This ranges from 3 to 4 hours for the lower quality tapes to up to 3 days for higher quality tapes.
For stencilling or masking on already painted walls use a low tack Masking Tape.
Use an exterior Masking Tape when masking outdoors.
For curved surfaces, such as arch windows, use a curved edge Masking Tape that has high flexibility.
Use high adhesive tape on concrete, wood, dirty surfaces and enamels. Avoid using this type in the sun.
Buy the blue tape if you absolutely will not be able to remove the tape within 24 hours - this is extended tape and can be used in the sun.
When constructed with polymer films instead of paper, Masking Tapes can be used for some rigorous applications.
Polyester based tapes are used to mask off during etching and plating for example.
Tapes based upon polymide films can resist molten solder in electronics applications.
Glass cloth Masking Tape is used for high temperature splicing and holding, particularly in powder coat painting.
