An experimental garment combining space-age technology, neoprene and VELCRO® brand has been developed in a bid to treat postpartum haemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal mortality.
A non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) – also called a "lifewrap" – is a half-body suit that is strapped to a woman's lower legs and abdomen to slow bleeding and prevent shock as a result of blood loss.
According to today's article in the Guardian, the World Health Organisation state that postpartum haemorrhage accounts for nearly a quarter of maternal deaths and is the leading cause of maternal mortality in most low-income countries.
